Sandra Day O'Connor Announces Retirement
Supreme Court justice, a key swing vote, departs after 24 terms
JULY 1--Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court, announced her retirement today. In a brief letter to President George W. Bush (which you'll find below), the 75-year-old O'Connor wrote that, 'It has been a great privilege indeed to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms. I will leave it with enormous respect for the integrity of the court and its role under our constitutional structure.' (1 page)
